Delhi Gang-Rape Convict Blames Victim for the Attack: BBC

A protest against sexual violence in New Delhi, Feb. 9.

Associated Press
In a soon-to-be-released documentary by a British filmmaker, one of six men who raped and murdered a young woman on bus in India’s capital in 2012 blames the attack on his victim and her male companion.
“You can’t clap with one hand—it takes two hands. A decent girl won’t roam around at nine o’clock at night,” Mukesh Singh says in the film, according to a statement by the British Broadcasting Corp., which will air it this month.
The assault by Mr. Singh and his friends galvanized public opinion and sparked mass demonstrations across India, leading to the passage of stricter laws against the mistreatment of women.
Mr. Singh and three co-defendants were sentenced to death in 2013 after being found guilty of crimes that the judge who presided over their trial said had “shocked the collective conscience” of the country. They have appealed.
Still, rape remains common and conservative quarters of society advocate restrictions on women’s freedom and blame Western influence and the greater liberties women enjoy in urban India for inciting violence against them.
During an interview in the prison where Mr. Singh is being held, he also said, “boy and girl are not equal. Housework and housekeeping is for girls, not roaming in discos and bars at night doing wrong things, wearing wrong clothes.”
The BBC is to air the film, “India’s Daughter,” directed and produced by Leslee Udwin, on March 8, International Women’s Day.
On Monday, the victim’s father called Mr. Singh’s reported statements “perverse and derogatory.” He said: “I hope these devils are hanged soon and not housed safely in jail.”
The woman Mr. Singh raped and killed was 23 at the time of the attack. She and a 28-year-old male friend were on their way home after watching a movie in an upscale mall when they were attacked.
Indian law bars naming victims of sexual assault.
“When being raped, she shouldn’t fight back. She should just be silent and allow the rape,” Mr. Singh says in the film, according to the BBC. If she hadn’t resisted, the rapists would “have dropped her off after ‘doing her,’” he says.
Prosecutors in the case said the attackers repeatedly inserted a metal rod into the victim, causing severe internal injuries. She was dumped by the side of a road. She died 13 days later while being treated at a Singapore hospital.
In an interview with The Wall Street Journal during his trial, Mr. Singh said he was at the wheel of the bus on which the woman was raped but did not know an attack was in progress as he drove around Delhi.
“I’m sorry. I could not save her. Please forgive me if you can,” he told the Journal, when asked about what he would say to the victim’s family if he ever met them.
Mr. Singh and the three others sentenced to death in the case have appealed to the country’s Supreme Court. A fifth defendant died while awaiting trial. Police say he killed himself, something his family disputes.
The sixth attacker was a juvenile at the time of the crime and was ordered to be held in a reformatory for three years, the maximum allowed under India’s youthful offender laws.

Baby born with two faces, brains in Australia

Video:

SYDNEY: An Australian woman has miraculously given birth to conjoined twins with one body and two brains despite doctors initially telling them to terminate the pregnancy.
Renee Young and Simon Howie, of Tregear in Sydney’s west, welcomed their daughters on Thursday six weeks before they were due.
The couple, who found out via an ultrasound that the twins they were expecting was in fact one child with two symmetrical faces and two brains connected by the one brain stem, said doctors were shocked by the girls’ exceptional progress.
‘They are breathing perfectly on their own and feeding,’ Mr Howie told Woman’s Day.
Ms Young gave birth to the girls, named Faith and Hope, via an emergency caesarean at Blacktown Hospital last Thursday.
The girls were born with a rare condition called diprosopus, which means they share the same body and vital organs but have their own faces and brains which are connected by only one brain stem.
‘Even though there is only one body, we call them our twins. To us, they are our girls and we love them,’ Mr Howie said.
They were transferred to the Children’s Hospital at Westmead shortly after they were born.
‘We have no idea how long they will be in hospital. We just want to bring them home, happy and healthy to make our family a little bit bigger and a bit more chaotic,’ Mr Howie said.
The condition is so rare that only 35 cases have ever been recorded and none have survived.
Due to the incredibly complex nature of their condition, doctors are so unsure about what to expect from the twin’s condition that they are being forced to make their prognoses day by day.

Pakistani man claiming himself ‘Prophet’ arrested in Punjab

Man-claiming-himself-Prophet
VIHARI, Punjab: Pakistan’s law enforcement agency on Thursday arrested a man claiming himself ‘Prophet’ in Vihari, a district located in Punjab province.
Police officials have detained a man allegedly calling himself a Prophet, which considers as blasphemous act amongst Muslim, and registered First Investigation Report (FIR) in City police station.
The man reportedly named as Ghulam Akbar who claimed for being a Prophet during a public gathering held in Mailsi Tehsil of Vihari district, Express News reported.
Akbar’s statement was visually recorded by the attendants of the public gathering, which would be provided to court as evidences, reports revealed.
Local citizens presented the visual recording of Akbar’s controversial statement before a committee comprising of local clerics, which unanimously announced decision to file case against the ‘culprit’ under blasphemous act.
The case was filed by the police department after legal complaint of local citizen under Pakistan’s Punishment Act 295-CK over allegations of debatable statement for ‘distorting Holy Quran, Prophecy, Revelation, Adhaan, Prophecy and Mecca’.
It is noteworthy to mention here that the capital punishment under Act 295-CK is death penalty over blasphemous move against Prophecy.

PEMRA wants all channels to air Azan on time

There was a time when it was obligatory on the two channels that existed in Pakistan to telecast Azan on daily basis, even if it meant interrupting their programs in between. But now, there are many private channels in Pakistan but none of them telecasts Azan.
To address the issue, a resolution is going to be tabled in the next session of the Pakistan National Assembly which is expected to make it mandatory on all private channels to telecast Azan every day. It remains to be seen if this resolution gets approved by the members of the assembly or not.

Imran Khan warns govt against thwarting May 11 protest

Lahore: Imran Khan Wednesday warned the government to sever circumstances if it tried to stop PTI peaceful protest against rigging on May 11.

Addressing to press conference here, PTI chief said there was no other way left for them but to take onto streets as they have been knocking every door against the rigging in last general elections since a year but no one giving them justice.
Khan said he had gone to courts, tribunals, Parliament against the alleged rigging but no institute is ready to listen to him adding that Speaker National Assembly has taken stay order against his plea.
He said after disappointment from all institutes his party has decided to stage protest which is their legal right.
Imran Khan suggested that Article-6 must be applied on those who have won the polls with rigging added such rulers can not solved problems of masses who came into power by dishonest means.
He said PTI would present charter of demands during May 11 protest at D-chowk in the capital.
He warned that PML-N government may crumble if it tried to stop or sabotage May 11 rally, adding the government will have to face consequences if our workers were barred from participating in the rally.
“There is no use of taking part in such elections where polls are always rigged. People of Pakistan seek the justice,” said Imran Khan whose PTI rules Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with coalition partner, Jamaat-e-Islami.
The PTI chief, however, refrained this time from accusing the judiciary of involvement in election irregularities, saying that “our party respects judiciary.”
But he again questioned the role of returning officers and a media house in facilitating PML-N win in 2013 elections.
Khan called for action against election riggers. “Those stole the public mandate should be punished under Article 6 of the constitution.”
When asked how Geo was involved in rigging, Khan said Geo anchor Najam Sethi o had rigged in 35 constituencies by “35 punctures” later Sethi was rewarded with PCB chairmanship and Geo with millions of dollar cricket contracts.
He said he is not against all Geo staff as many journalists in Geo had given great sacrifices for freedom of media.
PTI chief alleged Geo owner Mir Shakil is black mailing him by character assassination campaign against him added that he would not be afraid of this cheap campaign.
Lashing out at government, Khan said Nawaz government had paid Rs. 500 billion circular debt, despite spending such big amount from public money, people are suffering with 20 hours long power cut and circular debt has swelled to Rs. 200 billion again.

Pakistan leaves Iphone 5s Tech Behind

ISLAMABAD: Probably a machine Apple would have to work yet, Pakistan has developed an electronic voting machine which would use thumb impression to count a vote.
Tariq Malik, chairman of National Database Registration Authority (NADRA), reveals that the authority has managed to develop a unique machine for the electronic voting.
The technology is quite similar to the newly introduced Fingerprint Impression technology in its latest version of iPhone, iPhone 5S. But this technology has taken a multidimensional investment of finances, human and technology of Apple.
But the newly developed machine from the country is more significant as compared to iPhone 5S in sense that it would count millions of millions of fingerprint impressions within a span of 09 to 10 hours.
“Electronic Voting Machine has been developed in collaboration with Telephone Industry of Pakistan (TIP),” Malik said.
TIP is state sponsored institution producing Telephone Exchanges, Hybirds, Printed Circuit boards, Telephone sets, Communication towers, Container Shells, Telecom Batteries, Fire Alarm System, Drop wire and Energy meters as it’s product range.
From the upcoming general elections, the machine could be used using thumb impression. The move is likely to break the prevalent trend of fake voting in various constituencies of the country.
