Imran Khan blasts ICC’s ‘colonial’ revamp

KARACHI: Pakistan legend Imran Khan has slammed controversial plans to reform cricket’s governing body, saying they would take the game back to the days of colonialism.
Moves to restructure the International Cricket Council (ICC) to hand power to India, Australia and England, the game’s financial powerhouses, were passed in principle during a board meeting on Tuesday.
Khan, who captained Pakistan to their sole World Cup win in 1992, said the proposals harked back to the days when England and Australia had effective right of veto at the ICC.
“If I was the PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board) head I would have strongly objected the new colonial system,” Khan said.
“I think the answer is to make the ICC more productive for the betterment of cricket.”
He said Tuesday’s meeting at ICC headquarters in Dubai reminded him of one he attended in 1993.
“Then India and Pakistan were on the same page and they fought to end the imperialism in the ICC and wanted it to be run in a democratic way,” Khan said.
“It became democratic until India, because of its big money influence and supported by Australia and England, made it back to square one.”
PCB chairman Zaka Ashraf went into Tuesday’s meeting saying Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and South Africa were united against the so-called “Big Three” plans.
He said the PCB’s Board of Governors will meet in Lahore on Monday to discuss the next move ahead of a second ICC meeting on February 8.
“We are not against anyone, neither did we try to form any forward block, we just want to move with all members and the matter will be discussed on Monday,” Ashraf said at a press conference in Lahore.
He also said he would seek guidance from Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
Khan, who played 88 Tests and 175 one-day internationals for Pakistan, said the game was in “genuine crisis.”
“There is a lack of quality in players, if you talk of spinners or fast bowlers or batsmen, and unless a correct mix is not found cricket will suffer,” he said.
“The revenue is coming but money should not be decisive and that’s why the quality is suffering which is disastrous.”

The Housewife's Lament

MONEY is tight. The kids are demanding. Skin is raw from all the cooking, cleaning and chores that have to be done every day. There’s absolutely no time to spare for anything else, whether it’s pursuing further education or volunteering for a special cause.

Does this sound familiar? There are Muslim women all over the world who find themselves at home, living life as domestic stay-at-home mums and housewives. It’s a physically and emotionally demanding job and it’s also a pretty thankless one. How can spending all day serving others, instead of being involved in some kind of noble, public cause, ever be truly fulfilling and worth recognition – not just by people, but by Allah Himself?
Fatimah bint Muhammad is known to be one of the four most perfect women in the entire world.
“Prophet Muhammad (sallAllahu 'alayhi wa sallam) drew four lines and said to the Companions, "Do you know what these are?" They said, "Allah and His Messenger know best." He said, "The best women of the women of Paradise are Khadeejah bint Khuwaylid, Fatimah bint Muhammad, Maryam bint Imran and Aasiyah bint Muzahim (the wife of the Pharaoh)." (Ahmad)

Yet when we look at the biography of Fatimah bint Muhammad (radhiAllahu 'anha), one could say that in comparison to others amongst the early Muslim women, her life was relatively unremarkable. She grew up during a difficult time for her parents, when her father was being publicly mocked and derided for preaching his message; she lost her mother at a relatively young age and she married her cousin Ali ibn Abi Talib when she was about fifteen years old. Some of the most well-known ahadeeth related by her mention how physically demanding her lifestyle was, such that her hands would crack and bleed from the wheat-grinding that she used to do.

What made Fatimah so special? So special, in fact, that she will forever be known as one of the greatest women of Paradise?
Fatimah bint Muhammad is not known for an act of dramatic courage such as that displayed by Nusaybah bint Ka’b during the battle of Uhud, but she too provides an example for a situation that many Muslim women around the world live and continue to face: the everyday drudgery of life as a wife and mother.

Fatimah may have been the most beloved daughter to the Messenger of Allah, who was also the head of the Islamic State and leader of the Muslim army, but that didn’t mean that her life was one of luxury or ease.

Quite to the contrary, Fatimah was the mother of two young boys and ran her household single-handedly. Life was difficult back then, with none of the technologies that smooth our way through tedious tasks today. She used to grind the wheat for her bread with her own hands, to the point that her hands would crack and bleed. Her husband, ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib, was an employee of one of the Ansaar, but the income was meagre and they struggled to survive on a daily basis.

One day, weary and despairing of the toll that their lifestyle was taking on her, Fatimah decided that she would approach her father, RasulAllah (sallAllahu 'alayhi wa sallam). At the time, the Muslims had won a battle and, as a result, had captured several prisoners and other spoils of war. With the reasoning that as a member of the Ummah, she was entitled to some relief, Fatimah went to visit one of RasulAllah’s homes. She did not find her father present, but seeing her stepmother A’ishah, Fatimah shared the story of her bleeding hands and her wish for a maidservant to take on a share of the burdens.
Fatimah went back to her home, and when RasulAllah returned to his own house, A’ishah told him about his daughter’s visit.
That same night, RasulAllah slipped into his daughter’s home, where she and ‘Ali were already lying in bed.
‘Ali narrates, “I wanted to get up, but the Prophet said, ‘Remain in your place.’ Then he sat down between us until I felt the coolness of his face on my chest. The Prophet said, ‘Shall I teach you a thing which is better than what you have asked me? When you go to bed, say, 'Allahu akbar' thirty-four times, and 'subhanAllah’ thirty-three times, and 'Alhamdulillah’ thirty-three times for that is better for you both than a servant.’"(Bukhari, Book #57, Hadith #55)

After this, Fatimah never repeated her request for a maid ever again.

It may seem to be a small, insignificant thing, but subhanAllah this was one of the reasons for which Fatimah earned her position as one of the queens of Jannah. Her life was spent quietly serving her Lord, through her sincere intentions behind caring for her husband and children. Around her, there were many sahabiyaat whose lives seemed much more exciting, full of adventure and grandeur. Her stepmother, A’ishah, was a great scholar; her great-aunt Safiyyah bint Abdul-Muttalib was fierce in battle and the women of Madinah were renowned for their boldness in approaching any matter.
Nonetheless, for Fatimah bint RasulAllah, the path to Paradise was simple – though never easy. For every stay-at-home-mother and housewife who feels that her life is too consumed by daily drudgery, who worries that her life is too dull to be of consequence, the quiet strength of Fatimah bint RasulAllah is an inspiration and a reminder that no deed, however small or seemingly insignificant, is overlooked by Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Just.
For indeed, Allah does not allow to be lost the reward of those who do good. (Surah Hud, verse 115)
Jannah is not only for the Prophets, the martyrs, the ascetics, or the scholars; Jannah is attainable by every Muslimah, no matter her occupation or station in life. In the eyes of Allah, every sincere Muslim woman who pledges her life to pleasing her Lord is a heroine of Islam.

Offers for rare car plate hit SR3m but owner still not selling

A rare car plate that belongs to an Egyptian expatriate in Riyadh has reached the price of SR3 million, but the owner is still not selling, an online news reported on Wednesday.
The much-coveted car plate reads “SSS 1” and is owned by Hisham Al-Beely, whose 1998 model car of unnamed brand that does not exceed the price of SR12,000, says an Al-Arabiya.net report on Wednesday.
Despite the unbelievable offers and considering that his monthly salary is less than SR4,000, Al-Beely refuses to sell the plate. His reason: he wants to remain loyal to his Saudi friend who gifted the car to him.
Tired of being stopped along the road by wealthy Saudis offering to buy the plate, he said he stopped bringing out his car. “Now I don’t use the car to travel. I take taxis when I go to work to avoid being badgered about the plate,” he said.
Al-Beely was quoted by the report as saying he was first offered SR200,000 for the plate and the car. The latest offer reached SR3 million.
A large number of wealthy Saudis interested in fancy number plates attend events of plates auctions for beloved numbers such as 8888, 9999 and 9000 and other plates holding their wives’ names of three letters and the one-number plates like NNN 5 or ALB 6

South Korea to launch 5G service so fast users can download an entire film in just ONE SECOND

  • South Korea is now investing £900million in 5G services
  • Trial service expected in 2017 with commercial service by December 2020
  • Will allow users to download a 800MB movie file in one second
  • Speeds up to 1GB per second are 1,000 times faster than 4G
South Korea is to introduce a blazing fast 5G mobile internet service, quick enough to download a full length feature film in less than a second.
While most of the world has yet to experience the improvements offered by 4G services, the technologically advanced country has announced a  £900million (1.6 trillion won) in its successor.
South Korea's science ministry said it aims to implement the technology, which is about 1,000 times faster than the 4G, within six years.

Thumbnail:

5G will allow users to download a 800-megabyte movie file in one second, compared with 40 seconds using 4G, the science ministry said, adding that such speeds would help South Korean firms win overseas deals.

A ministry spokesman said: 'We helped fuel national growth with 2G services in the 1990s, 3G in the 2000s and 4G around 2010. Now it is time to take preemptive action to develop 5G.'
'Countries in Europe, China and the US are making aggressive efforts to develop 5G technology ... and we believe there will be fierce competition in this market in a few years,' it said.

THE 5G REVOLUTION

  • 1,000 times faster than the 4G
  • Speeds of up to 1gbps
  • 800-megabyte movie file downloaded in less than one second
  • Trial 5G service will be rolled out in South Korea in 2017
  • Fully commercial service in December 2020
  • Chinese manufacturer Huawei looking at a 5G rollout by 2020
Under the roadmap, a trial 5G service will be rolled out in 2017 and a fully commercial service in December 2020.
Priority will be given to developing key features for the new network, including Ultra-HD and hologram transmission as well as cutting-edge social networking services.
Related industries will be able to rack up sales of 5G-related devices and infrastructure equipment worth 331 trillion won from 2020 to 2026, the ministry estimated.
The government hopes to implement the plan with investment and cooperation from operators such as SK Telecom and Korea Telecom as well as handset makers like Samsung and LG.
It also aims to expand the telecom infrastructure equipment industry, which is relatively weaker than the mighty mobile device sector.
Led by Samsung - the world's top handset maker - South Korea has a leading 30-percent stake in the global mobile device market.
'But the (telecom) infrastructure equipment industry has only a 4.4 percent share in the global market, with exports very limited,' the ministry said.
Chinese equipment makers including Huawei have expanded their presence in the global market from 12 percent in 2007 to 26 percent in 2012.
Huawei announced in November that it was looking at a 5G commercial rollout by 2020, with a minimum investment of $600 million to develop the technology.
Seoul intends to take up to a 20 percent stake in the world's telecom infrastructure equipment market by 2020, according to the ministry.

New opportunities South Korea is renowned for being at the forefront of internet technology with broadband speeds that consistently out-pace those in Europe or the United States.
Officials said the new service would also mean people on bullet trains running faster than 500 kilometres (310 miles) an hour would even be able to access the Internet, compared with 300 kph currently.
'Bullet trains around the world keep getting faster, with some in China running as fast as 500 and 600 kilometres per hour,' said one ministry official who declined to be named.
'If we have the technology to allow fast Internet access in these trains, it can open new opportunities for us globally,' he said.
Samsung Electronics announced back in May that it had successfully tested 5G technology, managing data transmission of more than one gigabyte per second over a distance of two kilometres.
Samsung said it had found a way to harness millimetre-wave bands which have proved to be a sticking point for the mobile industry to date.
The test used 64 antenna elements, which the tech titan said overcame the issue of 'unfavourable propagation characteristics' that have prevented data travelling across long distances using the bands.
However, it made clear that the technology would not be available commercially before the end of the decade.
