Agent sends Pakistani Hajis on visit visas

Agent sends Pakistani Hajis on visit visas

Nine Pakistani businesspeople, including four women, were allegedly cheated by an agent into believing that they could visit the Kingdom on Haj visas. They were arrested on arrival, released and sent back to Karachi on Friday.
Hailing from Karachi, the alleged victims were issued visit visas by the agent instead of Haj visas.
“The victims were cheated by the agent in Pakistan, and they were unaware that they were supposed to travel on Haj visas and not visit visas,” said Suhail Ali Khan, press consular at the Pakistan Consulate in Jeddah. “They were arrested and put in jail for five days for traveling from Madinah to Makkah without Haj permits,” said Khan.
He said the travelers were not given enough time to check their visas and documents before departure.
“These Pakistanis had each paid 550,000 Pakistani rupees for Haj visa. They are victims of a scam. The agent gave them their passports at Isha prayer and asked them to be at the airport at Fajr the same day, They hardly had any time to check their visas. Pakistan Consul General Aftab Khokhar met them and with the intervention of the consulate, they were released from Madinah Tarheel and sent back to Karachi.”
Khan had an advice for pilgrims: “Don’t come for Haj on visit or other visas.” Thursday was the last date for pilgrims to travel from Madinah to Makkah. The news was first broken by Saudi media group-chat and later confirmed by the Pakistan Consulate in Jeddah.
According to sources, the report of the incident was sent by the embassy to Islamabad which is expected to release a formal statement on this later.
The Saudi authorities had announced that those caught performing Haj without a permit would be deported immediately and banned from entering the Kingdom for 10 years. Also, owners of vehicles smuggling unauthorized pilgrims to the holy sites would be detained and fined, and their vehicles impounded.

Speaking with Arab News, Khan said: “I am also ready to perform Haj with President Mamnoon during his first visit to the Kingdom. President Hussain performed prayers at the Prophet's Mosque.”
“President Hussain prayed for excellent bilateral ties with Saudi Arabia. He also prayed for the solidarity, progress and prosperity of the people of Pakistan,” Khan said.

A Saudi Drone

A Saudi Drone,KACST produces three types of drones

King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) recently produced three types of drones (pilotless planes), the first of their kind in the Kingdom, announced Khalid bin Abdullah Al-Husan, superviser of the National Center for Aviation Technology (NCAT) at KACST.
The air drones, code-named Saqr 2, 3 and 4, are made of carbon and fiberglass and are characterized as light and durable to evade detection of radar and reconnaissance equipment, he explained.
The drones can be programmed from a ground-based control room, he added.
The newly created devices contain automatic control units, as well as logarithms programs, which can deal with and adapt to different wind speeds and temperatures, engine combustion, emergency landing or climb, or deviation from flight path, Al-Husan said.
The drones also contain communication devices and an operation room, where images and videos can be directly passed on to the control room, he noted.
Through the programming mechanism, the drones’ path or targets can be determined, including mountains, farms, waters and valleys, in addition to moving targets such as vehicles, trains or a mass movement of humans.
The superviser highlighted that the drones are automatically operational and programmed in advance. They only need a flight engineer who could monitor the devices and sensors on board from the ground control room.
In case of a malfunction or breakdown, the flight engineer has several options to choose from, including opting for emergency landing or returning the drone to the ground control room, Al-Husan said.
He explored the features of each type of drone in terms of speed, flight durability, weight and load capacity.
The drones will be used in cases of natural or environmental disasters, aerial photography, remote sensing and exploration, agriculture, border control and rescue operations, he pointed out.

King Abdullah Park ‘undamaged, functioning’

King Abdullah Park ‘undamaged, functioning’

Officials in Riyadh have brushed off rumors and media reports the new King Abdullah Malaz Park has been damaged in any manner.
“There is no truth whatsoever in the tampering and vandalism reports (of the park) claimed by some social media users and local newspapers,” Abdullah Al-Muqbil, secretary of the Riyadh region, said in a statement issued yesterday.
Mohammed Suleiman, director-general of the garden and landscape architecture at the Riyadh secretariat, said the park’s main attraction, the “Dancing Fountain,” was still in operation. He said the caretakers were maintaining the park.
Reports of the alleged vandalism went viral last week that claimed there was garbage lying around, broken plastic seats, damaged flowerpots, and mud in the new fountain.
Agreeing with the officials’ statements, an expatriate who requested anonymity told Arab News the fountain was operating smoothly when he went to the park.
“I went with my family on Tuesday night and saw the breathtaking dancing fountain.” He took photographs and videos because his children loved the show, he said and showed a video to support his claim. Some Saudi netizens said they did not know whom to believe.
“There are people spreading lies and rumors on their social media accounts to cut livelihoods and threaten others for their personal interests. They have lost credibility,” user bird1234 commented.
Another user called on government officials to determine the truth and punish those telling lies.
Riyadh Gov. Prince Khalid bin Bandar opened the park with much fanfare only last week, showcasing the giant fountain and its colorful laser lighting.
Visitors earlier claimed that the fountain was not working because children had thrown mud into it. Vandals had also broken seats and flowerpots, they claimed.
Speaking with Arab News then, Mohsin Ali Khan, a Riyadh-based accountant, had said he was angry at the damage done and urged the city authorities to deploy guards at the park.
Nabeel Nasir, an IT professional in the city, said the police should arrest and punish the perpetrators. “Such punishments will deter miscreants from defacing public property,” Nasir said.
Abdullah Ahmad, who went to the park Thursday last week with his family, was disappointed to find it in such a poor state. He was not able to “enjoy the laser show and dancing musical fountain.”
The 318,000-sqm state-of-the-art park is close to Prince Faisal bin Fahd Stadium and was built as a venue for heritage exhibitions and recreational activities during the holidays.
It consists of a 12-meter-wide pedestrian corridor, surrounded by lush greenery and illuminated lamps mounted on poles. It opened to young people for two days and families for five days.

KSA:Five women detained for driving

A Saudi activist says at least five women have been taken into custody accused of defying the men-only driving rule in the ultraconservative Arab kingdom.

The detentions mark the first major backlash by Saudi authorities since a campaign was launched nearly two weeks ago to challenge the driving restrictions.

Dozens of women have since driven through the capital Riyadh and other cities.

Saudi-based rights activist Eman al-Nafjan says police detained a woman Tuesday while driving in Jiddah on the Red Sea coast. Al-Nafjan says four other women accused of driving were later detained in the city.

Al-Nafjan spoke to The Associated Press on Wednesday. She says there has been no new information on the status of the detainees.

5 lesser-known benefits of having a beard-Must Read

From sprouting a little scruff to going straight-up Zach Galifianakis, there’s good reason to take a break from your razor this summer—and not just because it can speed up your morning routine. Research shows that growing a beard is actually the key to keeping you younger-looking, naturally moisturized, and cancer-free.

Here, five doctor-approved reasons to let your beard grow.

1. Sun Protection

According to recent research from the University of Southern Queensland, beards block up to 95 percent of the sun’s UV rays, which can play a huge role in preventing basal-cell carcinomas (the most common form of all cancers). Key stats to know: Four out of five cases in men appear on the face, head, or neck and the sun is to blame for up to 90 percent of the visible signs of aging. So while facial hair won’t keep your forehead from developing Jack Nicholsonesque creases, it will keep the bottom half of your face looking young.

2. Blemish-Free Skin

Forgoing the razor doesn’t just hide blemishes—it actually prevents them. “Razor rash, acne, and folliculitis [hair-follicle inflammation] are often the result of shaving,” said Dr. Shannon C. Trotter, a fellow of the Osteopathic College of Dermatology and a dermatologist at the Ohio State Wexner Medical Center. “Razors can irritate the skin or even spread bacteria, causing an infection of the hair follicle.”

3. More Masculinity

There’s a reason you’d never steal a lumberjack’s lady: The more facial hair a man has, the more masculine both men and women perceive him to be, according to research published in Evolution and Human Behavior. If pure, unadulterated masculinity is what you’re going for, let your beard hang low. If you’re looking to impress the opposite sex, skip the razor for 10 glorious days in a row; the study found that’s the length women find the most attractive.

4. Natural Moisture

You probably didn’t know your face has its own built-in moisturizing regimen—it’s called your sebaceous glands (oil glands for short) and, according to Trotter, it secretes a natural oil that keeps skin moisturized. A thick beard not only prevents you from rubbing it off of your face, it also protects the face from wind exposure, which leads to redness and dryness (just in case you were planning your next high-altitude climb).

5. Trapped Allergens

Your nose hairs trap more than you think they do. In addition to what you see in a tissue, nose hairs trap pollutants that could actually cause your body harm. So the more hair you have under your airways (read: the bigger your beard), the more pollutants you’re snaring every day, according to Dr. Clifford W. Bassett, Allergy and Asthma Care of NY medical director. Just be sure to treat your beard like any other filter and wash it regularly.

Shoura Council puts brakes on women driving proposal

The Shoura Council on Thursday rejected a move by three women members to have the body discuss lifting a ban on women driving in the country, according to a report quoting the SPA.
The 150-member council, which has 30 women members, rejected a move by one woman member to raise the issue during a discussion on Thursday of Transport Ministry matters, the SPA said.
It said the issue was “irrelevant” to the discussions and “not within the Transport Ministry's remit.”
Ihsan Abu Haliqa, a former member of the Shoura Council, told Arab News: “Any recommendation to be studied by the council must be filed by the majority of Shoura members. There are only three women Shoura members who filed a recommendation to study the issue of women driving.”
He said the consultative body “does not deal with individual recommendations” and that there should be significant social pressure for the issue to be taken up. He said the council does not support women driving.

Two more Saudis die of Corona Virus

Two more Saudis have died of the MERS coronavirus, raising death toll from the respiratory disease in the Kingdom to 51, the Ministry of Health said on Thursday.
The latest fatalities, both men aged 78 and 55, were suffering from other chronic diseases, the ministry said on its website.
The report did not specify when the deaths occurred, saying only that both were from Riyadh.
Two more infections were also reported, bringing to 119 the number of people infected in the kingdom, the ministry said.
Worldwide, MERS, or Middle East Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus, has so far claimed 58 lives since it was first discovered by scientists in September last year.
The other deaths were reported in Tunisia, France, Britain, France and Jordan.
Experts are struggling to understand MERS, for which there is no vaccine. It has also caused worries
as Saudi Arabia prepares to host some two million Muslim pilgrims for the annual Haj, which begins on Sunday.
Health Minister Abdullah Al-Rabeea, however, noted that authorities have not yet recorded any MERS cases among pilgrims arriving from all over the world.
“So far, no case of any epidemic has been recorded among the pilgrims, especially the coronavirus,” he said.
Health authorities in Makkah, where the pilgrims will be concentrated, have expressed optimism that the Haj will pass off without any outbreak, given that Muslims also go on lower-level pilgrimages throughout the year and there has been no mass spread of MERS.
as part of precautionary measures, authorities have urged the elderly and chronically ill to avoid the Haj and for pilgrims to wear face masks.
MERS is considered a deadlier but less-transmissible cousin of the SARS virus that erupted in Asia in 2003 and infected 8,273 people, nine percent of whom died, and sowed economic chaos.
Like SARS, MERS is believed to have jumped from animals to humans. It shares the former’s flu-like symptoms, but differs by also causing kidney failure

Saudi preacher jailed 8 years for raping, killing daughter

Fayhan al-Ghamdi, a Saudi preacher, has been sentence to eight years in prison and 800 lashes for raping his five-year-old daughter and torturing her to death.
A Saudi court sentenced a preacher convicted of raping his five-year-old daughter and torturing her to death to eight years in prison and 800 lashes, a lawyer said Tuesday.

In a case that drew widespread public condemnation in the kingdom and abroad, the court also ordered Fayhan al-Ghamdi to pay his ex-wife, the girl's mother, one million riyals ($270,000) in “blood money,” lawyer Turki al-Rasheed told AFP.

Blood money is compensation for the next of kin under Islamic law.

The girl’s mother had demanded 10 million riyals ($2.7 million).

Ghamdi’s second wife, accused of taking part in the crime, was sentenced to 10 months in prison and 150 lashes, said Rasheed, who is lawyer for the girl’s mother.

Ghamdi was convicted of “raping and killing his five-year-old daughter Lama,” he added.

The girl was admitted to hospital on December 25, 2011 with multiple injuries, including a crushed skull, broken ribs and left arm, extensive bruising and burns, activists said. She died several months later.

Ghamdi, a regular guest on Muslim television networks despite not being an authorized cleric in Saudi Arabia, had confessed to having used cables and a cane to inflict the injuries, human rights activists said earlier this year.

Randa al-Kaleeb, a social worker from the hospital where Lama was admitted, said the girl’s back was broken and that she had been raped “everywhere.”

Reportedly, Ghamdi had tortured and raped his daughter after he had doubted her virginity.

Rights activists in the kingdom had been campaigning for harsher punishment of Ghamdi when reports emerged in January that the court would only give him a short jail term and order him to pay blood money to the mother.

In ultra-conservative Saudi Arabia, where rape and murder are among several crimes punishable by death, a father cannot be executed for murdering his children, nor can husbands be executed for murdering their wives.

Such crimes carry a jail sentence between five to 12 years.

4,200 cameras Installed to ensure security during Hajj

Authorities have set up advanced cameras around the holy sites to monitor pilgrim movement and ensure their safety, said Maj. Gen. Abdullah Al-Zahrani, commander of the Command and Control Center for Haj operations.
“We are using powerful digital cameras for the first time this year. These cameras can monitor events taking place 60 km away. They can also operate under difficult weather conditions,” he said.
Al-Zahrani said that the director-general of public security has instructed his department to acquire the latest technology to carry out their mission effectively. “We have installed about 4,200 cameras in important locations at the holy sites. This number will increase with the expansion of the holy sites,” the general told reporters.
He said his organization provides government departments with critical information.

Power supply
Ali bin Saleh Al-Barrak, CEO of the Saudi Electricity Company (SEC), has approved the company’s Haj plan to ensure a continuous supply of electricity to the holy sites.
The SEC plays a vital role in the successful management of the pilgrimage, when nearly 2 million pilgrims gather in Makkah and the holy sites of Mina, Arafat and Muzdalifah.
Al-Barrak visited the SEC’s office in Makkah to inspect preparations ahead of Haj.
“We have made arrangements to provide a continuous and reliable supply of electricity,” he said, adding that the SEC would make efforts to meet the growing demand for electricity in Makkah, Madinah and the holy sites during the Haj
season.
Al-Barrak met with Makkah Gov. Prince Khaled Al-Faisal and briefed him on the company’s achievements during the past five years and its future projects. In the next five years, there will be a 8,405MW increase in electricity in the next five years, which will be made possible by the 200 new projects worth SR51 billion.
New Muslims
The International Organization for New Muslims (IONM) and International Qur’an Memorization Organization (IQMO) have invited 25 new Muslims from different countries to perform Haj this year.
They will also assist a group of different nationalities who have memorized the Qur’an to perform Haj with the support of the Hassan Sharbatly Foundation.
Khaled Al-Romaih, secretary-general of IONM, said his organization helps people who have recently embraced Islam to further their understanding of the religion.
“We also work to bolster their relations with other Muslims,” he said. His organization has helped 500 new Muslims perform Haj in the past.
Ibrahim Sharbatly, deputy chairman of the foundation’s board of trustees, stressed the importance of undertaking social work during Haj
